The Plight of Fake Steve

December 23rd, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Tech News by Justin Flood

Wow, talk about bad Christmas cards!

Apparently, as with the recent shutdown of Apple rumor-mill site Think Secret, the moves are being made by the Apple legal team to shut down the perennial favorite fake-benevolent-dictator.

Recent posts on the Fake Steve Jobs Website indicate that Real Steve Jobs is REALLY tired of Fake Steve Jobs, and have threatened to sue with monetary damages to force Fake Steve ( Forbes editor Dan Lyons) to shut down his highly entertaining blog. Lawyers at Apple are playing the “insider sources” card, saying that Fake Steve predicted a “one button iPhone” and the release of new products at a trade show, and these were in fact leaks from Apple.

So apparently lawyers at Apple are trying to paint Fake Steve as a rumor site in sheep’s clothing? I laugh as I write this simply because it’s something that is SO in the character of both the real and fake Steve.

I mean, if this were “the Fake Fake Steve Jobs” vs “the Fake Steve Jobs”, it would be the same thing, except in that case it would be a joke. This appears to be no laughing matter.

It’s really a shame that RSJ can’t just be in on the joke and enjoy it for what it’s for. Don’t you get it dude!? People kid because they love! You are the rock star of computers. You’ve been parodied on Saturday Night Live (or was it mad TV?)! Face it, you’ve become a pop culture icon. There’s no need for you to beat up on a Forbes Magazine editor just because he can do a pitch perfect impression of you!

I mean seriously, the site is called FAKE Steve Jobs. There is no person on the planet who actually believes that it is the real deal. It’s obviously a parody, though one that apparently hits a bit too close for home for old Steve-y, and now he’s all pissed off.

I’d like to believe that RSJ is too smart to let something this small and silly cause a Microsoft-like lashing out on his part. But this doesn’t smell of a renegade Apple lawyer. This totally smells of the will of Steve ™.

I feel bad for Mr. Lyons too, because before he was outed, there was no way for RSJ to find out who he was. He was in a much safer position then. This is just a regular guy with a regular job, who’s apparently a very talented writer. (his book is hilarious if you havent read it.) And he really doesn’t deserve to lose his house or car or anything over something as silly as this. I hope if it does get to the point of trial, that the judge just throws it out immediately, realizing just how completely silly this whole matter is.

What he does is clearly satire, which is in no way shape or form illegal. So Apple is playing this “trade secret” card just as a way of getting rid of him.

Totally crappy.

I’d expect better from someone who’s totally one of my business idols. You’d thnk he would put the blog on a special mac address, and have it by default as one of the iPhone’s web bookmarks. Just because he’s down like that. But I guess not.

More on this as it develops. Oh and Real Steve? Grow up.

Wow hell is REALLY cold today!

Apparently according to the Microsoft Development Team behind Internet Explorer, the new version of the near-ubiquitous but much maligned web browser will be stepping up it’s fight in the browser wars a bit.

A post was made today to Microsoft’s Channel 9 development blog center, saying that the new version of Internet Explorer (internally known, strangely enough, as IE8) is able to accurately render the ACID2 test!

For those of you who don’t know, the ACID2 test is a test by the Web Standards Project (www.webstandards.org) which tests a web browsers ability to correctly display a website according to web standards.

Previously, only Opera and Webkit (the backbone of Apple’s Safari web browser) were the only browsers able to pass the ACID2 test. Firefox from Mozilla comes close, but makes some concessions to accommodate some poorly coded web sites. However, the current and previous versions of Internet Explorer were ESPECIALLY bad at rendering ACID2.

With the IE8 team showing that they are increasing their willingness to follow web standards, instead of previously relying on Microsoft only technologies like ActiveX, (which have been noted as having serious security vulnerabilities over the years), Microsoft may be seriously trying to muscle Mozilla and Opera out of the market.

It’s the Netscape , IE war all over again.

If Microsoft is actually able to create a browser that is competent enough that people won’t feel the need to move to another browser like Firefox, they will have won the war again. Since every Windows PC comes with a copy of IE.

Now, despite the fact that there seems to be a serious anti-microsoft sentiment growing in the market, with many people (myself included) switching to mac or linux, we aren’t there yet. So a good version of IE might just get people to hang on to a windows machine just a bit longer.

Things are starting to get interesting..

Well that’s it. Hell froze over.

Yep, I’m sure you’ve already seen it. The blogosphere is abuzz.

The new Duke Nukem Forever trailer is out.

…And… it sucks. That is, if it were real. But it’s not.

That’s right, I don’t really believe that this game is actually in production. 3d Realms is playing us people! Every few years they hand out a little crumb. A little bit of footage, a leaked screenshot. Just something to let you know that “When it’s done” just might actually come one day. But it isn’t coming people!

3d Realms is doing this simply as a social experiment, to see how long they can actually HOLD people’s attention. Sure, one of these years, maybe 10-15 years from now, when interest finally starts to wane permanently, they’ll release SOMETHING and call it Duke Nukem Forever. But believe me, they’ll just put it together in maybe 6-8 months and get it right out the door.

I have to give them credit though, for a running joke that started in 1997, they are doing a great job of keeping it going! I mean even LOLcats won’t be able to keep that up!

God has it really been nearly ELEVEN years since they announced this in 97? I guess it has.

I almost hope 3d Realms Never does release the damn thing. What will we make fun of if they do?

Ahh Nerd humor :-D
