What is Twitter’s freakin problem!?

Twitter, the burgeoning micro-blogging service / social network, has been having a serious bout of issues this weekend with nary a peep from the administrators of the site. An EXTREMELY curt notice was placed on the official Twitter status account, and almost nothing has been said on the official blog of the company.

For a social network that is dependent on up-to-the second updates and status, you’d think that the people running the show would be more up on things. As of writing this I’m finally starting to see updates from people in my personal feed again but it had been over two days since the problem started.

To me this is an opportunity for Twitter to grab defeat from the jaws of victory. If the service isn’t stable and reliable, people will move on to other services like Jaiku or Pownce which have more features anyway. The only reason people stick with Twitter is because that’s where everyone else is.

They are in the precarious position to become the Friendster of this space if they aren’t careful. There is always something bigger and better coming up right behind whatever you do in the tech industry. They need to learn the lesson that they can’t rest on their laurels and expect to succeed.
