Is Apple planning an “At a Glance” notification screen for iPhone?
Well it looks like Apple has finally come to the conclusion that almost every other smartphone maker had already come to about 10 years ago. People like to have an at a glance view of what’s going on. A recent patent application found today details a replacement for the lock screen of the iPhone (and presumably the iPod touch), that details notifications about missed calls, unread emails and SMS messages, and unheard voicemails.
I would presume that this measure was taken in response to developing the background push notification system that is currently in the works. If there are lots of apps phoning in notifications while the phone is locked, one would have to unlock the phone and look at one of many home screens full of icons to see what’s new.
With this system notifications would more than likely also be delivered to the lock screen, and would allow users to quickly access applications such as IM, or Mail, that contained new messages.
I have a feeling that this interface is much of the reason why the push notification system has been pushed back, and hopefully things are beginning to finally progress in the right direction.
