Google in talks to aquire Digg

July 23rd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Business, Mergers/Aquisitions, Tech News by Justin Flood

This is another one of those stories that seems to come around once every few months, but this time it looks like it’s really happening.  Reports have it that Google is in final negotiations with social-news aggregator Digg.com to be aquired for around $300 million.

Personally, besides the obvious large deposit from the Bank of Google(tm), I don’t see what Digg gets out of it.   Hopefully Google is smart enough to leave the site alone, and let it make it’s money from ad revenue.

The last thing I’d like to see happen here is for Digg to be rolled into Google News,  the sites are just too incompatible.  Google news is great for aggregating news from the MSM, as well as the occasional high-profile blog.   Digg is better at aggregating stories that are less attractive to a mainstream audience.  The news there tends to focus more on the nerdy, with most stories skewing tech or politics, with a large amount being pop-culture nerd humor.  Not to mention that Digg already has a large and vocal userbase that would undoubtedly be angered by a major shift in their favorite site.

I’m going to be watching this pretty closely,  This could develop into a very interesting story.

Full list of Starbucks stores to be closed is announced

July 19th, 2008 | 5 Comments | Posted in Business, General News by Justin Flood

Today Starbucks corporate announced the final list of the near 600 stores that would be closing due to lack of business and the declining econonmy.

I’m an unabashed fan of Starbucks, though I don’t particularly know why.  The coffee is better at Dunkin Donuts, and it’s generally pretty expensive.  I think it’s just the comfy chairs and friendly staff.  It’s a nice place to sit around at night with a bunch of friends.  So when they announced the closing of stores, I hoped that they wouldn’t close my favorite stores.

Well, it looks like my 3 favorite Starbucks stores (Lynbrook, NY, Massapequa, NY, and Deer Park, NY) have been spared the chopping block, so I’m happy.  Did they close YOUR favorite store?  Let us know in the comments!  Click below to read the entire list of stores being closed:
